The hamsa symbol (open right hand with eye in palm) is used as a sign of protection in many societies and is believed to provide defense against the evil eye. This ancient image is also known as the hand of Fatima (Islam), the hand of Mary (Christianity), and the hand of Miriam (Judaism). An open right hand facing outwards is also known as the abhaya mudra in buddhism and yoga.

This painting superimposes the image of hamsa with the head of the Buddha, with a yantra (focusing geometric pattern) in his right eye.
